I had the wonderful opportunity to speak with independent bookstore owners at the American Booksellers Association’s IndieCommerce Institute in Chicago on May 10th, 2016. What an amazing group of people!
I love to read books (on paper!) and I seek out local book stores wherever I go. I live in NYC and I’m fortunate to have three that I frequent often (see further down the page to see what they are). What’s more, this is IndieCommerce, as in Indiebound.org — THE website for authors, books and indie book sellers.
When I was contacted to speak at IndieCommerce, the charge was to offer SEO advice that would help local book store owners increase their business. I instinctively knew that this group did not want to hear advice on book signings or special events or social media. They typically have that stuff down pat. What they’re looking for is how they can they compete against the HUGE online book sellers (you know the ones), especially when Google Shopping has focused almost solely on supporting the big online book retailers.
I had a hunch from the beginning that local search would be the way to go. What I hadn’t realized is just how much Google is providing to support local book sellers be found for local searches. If you’d like to see what I discovered — along with some helpful local search tactics — check out my presentation below. I’ve also included links to videos of the actual presentation in case you’d like to hear what was asked and discussed by the participants (who were all indie bookshops).
Here’s the videos to hear the specifics and also the questions from the indie bookstore owners.

My Favorite NYC Indie Haunts:
As promised earlier, here’s a list of my favorite indie bookstores in NYC. These all happen to be in Manhattan. There are many and growing all over the City (and other cities, large and small), which is great to see.

Like I said, indie bookstores are on the rise again. If there’s any you’d like to share here, please do so in the comments! Happy reading!
